BLUF: If your inbox is full of pitches warning that AI is ignoring your business, read this before you spend money. Our team at AI Trust Signals read the homepages of 32 companies selling AI visibility software. Nearly every one promises the same thing in nearly the same words, and part of the number they charge you for is now free. The problem they point at is real. Most of the urgency in the pitch is there to close the sale.

Key Takeaways

  • We read 32 homepages of companies selling AI visibility software between June and August 2026. The sameness was the finding.
  • Effectively all 32 lead with one number: how often AI mentions your business compared with competitors.
  • Four of the six whose copy we quoted word for word use a nearly identical sentence about becoming "the answer."
  • Part of that number is now free. Google shows, at no cost, how often your pages appear in its own AI answers.
  • One HVAC company went from 79 to 95 on our score in 1 to 2 months by fixing three specific things, and a customer told them ChatGPT sent them.

Your inbox has been busy

Somewhere in the last few months, the emails started. Maybe a cold call too. The message is always the same. AI is answering your customers' questions right now, and your business is invisible in those answers. Luckily, there's a dashboard that will fix it for a few hundred a month.

The first part is true. AI really is answering questions that used to send people to your website, and most owners have no idea what it says about them.

The rest of it deserves a harder look. So we did the reading for you.

What do 32 homepages actually say?

Between June and August 2026, we read the homepages of 32 companies selling AI visibility software. Some are backed by big investors and have hundreds of employees. Some are two people. We wrote down what each one leads with, in their own words.

Read that table as the person being pitched. When nine companies say the same sentence, the sentence stops telling you anything. It's wallpaper.

And it moves fast. In January, "we measure it and we fix it" set a product apart. By June, every serious vendor was saying it. Anyone still leading with it this fall is following the pack.

Is the number they're selling you free?

Part of it is, and that should change how you read the next pitch.

The main number on almost every one of these homepages is some version of the same thing: how often AI names you compared with your competitors. Call it your mention count.

On June 3, 2026, Google added a free report to Search Console, its free tool for website owners. It shows how often your pages appear in Google's own AI answers. It only covers Google and has no competitor comparison. It's still a real piece of what these tools charge for. Several big search tools also bundle a version into subscriptions plenty of businesses already pay for. And at least six of the 32 give a free score away themselves to start the sales conversation.

When several companies will hand you a number for free, treat it as a starting point.

What happens after your mentions go up?

Say you buy the dashboard. Say it works, and six months later your mention count is up.

Then what?

Getting mentioned by AI and getting recommended by AI are two different things. A mention means AI named you somewhere in an answer. A recommendation means AI believed what it read about you enough to tell a buyer "call these people." That belief is what gets your phone to ring.

We covered the research behind this in AI Mentioned Your Business. That Doesn't Mean It Recommended You. The short version: AI believes facts it can check, and big claims about being the best barely register.

Every one of the 32 homepages sells showing up. Mentions are the scoreboard. Trust is the game.

What does AI actually check?

Here's a signal from our own data that no mention dashboard will hand you.

We scanned more than 3,200 businesses to see whether their website explains how they operate in plain words. That means things like pricing, terms, privacy, guarantees and what happens when something goes wrong.

58.7% scored Low. Nearly six in ten businesses sit in the vague bucket, which is exactly where AI gets cautious about recommending anyone.

No amount of mention tracking finds this. It's a proof problem, and an owner can often fix it in an afternoon without buying any software.

What does fixing it actually look like?

Honest Fix Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing serves homeowners in Steubenville, Ohio and the Upper Ohio Valley. They launched in 2026 and were already doing a lot of the right things. What they didn't have was any way to tell whether it was working.

"It was frustrating," said Alex Karns, Honest Fix's co-founder. "We were doing a lot of the right things but had no feedback loop. You don't know if the work is landing or disappearing into a void."

Their first AI Trust Signals report scored them 79. Then they made three specific changes:

  • Added structured labels (schema) to their service pages, so AI can read exactly what each service is.
  • Tightened up their business name, address and phone number so they match across the directories they're listed in.
  • Built out a team page that shows the real people behind the business.

One to two months later, their score was 95. A customer told them ChatGPT had recommended Honest Fix, and that's why they called.

Alex is careful about what he claims. They can't point to a single deal they'd pin on this work yet. What they've noticed is better-quality calls and more visitors arriving from AI tools, though they haven't measured it precisely.

"We went from 79% to 95%, and had a customer tell us ChatGPT sent them our way. For a startup, that's proof the foundation we're building is working."

Alex Karns, Co-Founder, Honest Fix Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing

What surprised him most? "How specific the recommendations were. It wasn't vague advice, it told us exactly what to fix and why it mattered."

Notice who did the work. Honest Fix made every change themselves, on their own site, knowing exactly what each one was for.

Four questions to ask the next vendor who calls

What they sayWhat to ask
"You are invisible in AI search."Invisible to whom, asking what question? Show me the actual prompt.
"We track your mentions across seven AI tools."Google shows me part of this for free. What am I paying you for on top of that?
"We'll fix it for you, automatically."Name the three specific fixes. Who approves each change before it goes live on my site?
"Here is your free score."Does the score tell me why AI skipped me?
Four questions to ask the next vendor who calls

That third question matters more than it looks.

Software that changes your website for you can publish things you never checked, like a price that isn't yours or a promise you don't make. And AI is checking whether what your site says is true and matches what everyone else says about you. A fix you didn't check can hurt the one thing you're trying to build.

The last question is the one that separates a report from a recommendation. Most tools will tell you where you stand. Very few will tell you what AI found lacking and what to do about it on Monday morning.

Why are we telling you this?

We sell AI visibility software too, so here's where we stand. We'd rather you understand this market than buy something in a panic, ours included.

Yes, we give away a free check too. It shows you what AI says when a buyer asks about your kind of business, and everyone should see that once. Judge any tool on what comes after that. Can it tell you why AI skipped you, in words you can act on? Does it hand you the fix?

Ask us that question. Ask everyone else too.

The bottom line

A pitch that sounds like eight other pitches is a crowded market talking. Take the free reading, from us or from anyone. Then spend your energy on what the mention dashboards miss: whether AI, reading about your business, can confirm you are who you say you are.

People still buy from businesses they trust. Now they ask AI first, and AI checks the same things a careful customer would.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are AI visibility tools a scam?

No. The problem they point at is real, and AI answers are changing how customers find businesses. The issue is sameness. When 32 companies sell the same number with nearly the same sentence, the pitch starts to matter more than the product. And part of that number is free elsewhere.

Do I need to pay for AI mention tracking?

Probably not as a first step. Google's free Search Console shows how often your pages appear in its own AI answers. Several search tools bundle a version, and at least six vendors give a score away. Pay when a tool tells you why AI skipped you and hands you specific fixes.

Should I let AI software make changes to my website for me?

Be careful. Automated fixes can publish prices or claims you never checked, and AI is looking for facts it can confirm. Make sure you approve every change and understand why it's being made. Honest Fix, in the story above, made every change themselves and knew why each one mattered.

What should I look at instead of mention counts?

Look at whether your claims can be checked. Named people with real bios, published policies and terms, reviews spread across the sites AI reads, and specific facts in place of big adjectives. AI believes what it can confirm.

How do I check what AI says about my business for free?

Run the free check at aitrustsignals.com/recommends. It takes a few minutes and needs no signup. You'll see who AI recommends when a buyer asks about a business like yours, and whether you made the list. Several other companies offer a free reading too, and comparing them is a reasonable thing to do.
